Open PhD position in the project “In vivo investigation of the role of adhesins in Staphylococcus aureus-induced infective endocarditis” in the Sonderforschungs-bereich TR34 “Pathophysiology of Staphylococci in the Post-Genomic Era”.
To be filled at the Experimental Magnetic Resonance Group (associated to the radiology department of the university hospital Münster) at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster, Germany.
PhD position (65% E13)
for a biologist, veterinarian, or MD
Ref.: 8306
with interest in
  • Small animal imaging
  • infectious (bacterial) disease models
Duties include further development of the (established) mouse model of infective endocarditis, non-invasive imaging (MRI) studies, microbiological and histological analyses.
Project abstract:
Infective endocarditis (IE) caused by Staphylococcus aureus is mediated by a complex interplay of different adhesive molecules (adhesins). This project aims to elucidate the role of individual adhesins and their interactions. We will use noninvasive magnetic resonance imaging for longitudinal assessment of an in vivo mouse model, in which endocarditis is induced by different isogenic mutants of S. aureus with knockout of individual adhesins. Based on the findings about essential adhesins, the second aim of this project is the development of a noninvasive imaging marker to specifically detect S. aureus-induced IE.
Available instrumentation:
9.4 T MRI system (Biospec with cryoprobe), fluorescence reflectance imaging system (with X-ray), access to small animal PET and small animal Micro-CT, mouse facility, microbiology and biochemical lab.
Close collaboration with the European Institute of Molecular Imaging (EIMI) and the Medical Microbiology department.
The positions will be available until 2018-06-30.
