PhD Position for the Study of ATPases in Cellular Stress Response
 
The group is located in the Institute of Biology II and is part of the Cluster of Excellence BIOSS - Centre for Biological Signalling Studies. We are an interdisciplinary research team of biologists, biochemists, chemists, physicists, and bioinformaticians using state-of-the-art high resolution mass spectrometry combined with protein biochemistry and bioinformatics as key technology for functional proteomics studies on a cellular to system-wide level. The department provides excellent research conditions with modern cell and molecular biology laboratories and latest instrumentation (Orbitrap Elite, Q Exactive, nano-HPLC, fluorescence microscopy etc.). The project is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and performed in close cooperation with the group of Prof. Dr. Hans-Georg Koch at the University of Freiburg.
The project focuses on a universally conserved ATPase which is involved in the regulation of cellular stress response and found to be up-regulated in various human tumors. The major aims of the project are (i) to identify the molecular targets of the ATPase, (ii) to define their function in the modulation of cellular stress response and (iii) to reveal the underlying mechanisms.
The successful candidate will perform functional studies using the eukaryotic model organism Saccharomyces cerevisiae as well as human cells. He/she will study the functional ATPase network including dynamic changes in the posttranslational state in response to oxidative stress and implications for modulating stress response in cells. This cutting-edge research project offers the unique possibility to employ a wide range of state-of-the-art technologies in biochemistry, mass spectrometry, proteomics and cell biology.
Applicants hold a diploma/master degree in biochemistry, biology or related disciplines. They should provide an excellent track record with a strong background in biochemistry, molecular biology and/or yeast genetics as well as great enthusiasm for membrane protein and signaling research. Excellent command of English and the ability to work in a team are required; experiences in protein chemistry, protein mass spectrometry or bioinformatics are highly advantageous. The position is available as of now. Project funding is secured for 3 years. The salary will be according to TV-L E13 (65%).
