“Biodiversity, pest control and pollination services along local and landscape-scale gradients of green infrastructure”

Rationale
Pollination and natural pest control are key ecosystem services that can lower pesticide use and increase crop yield quantity and quality. Ecological intensification aims to make use of these ecosystem services to substitute external inputs in agriculture, to achieve stable and sustainable crop production, and to maintain biodiversity in human-dominated agroecosystems. Organisms delivering ecosystem services depend to a large extent on non-crop habitats, or "green infrastructure" in the landscape. In a European research project the impacts of green infrastructure on the delivery of ecosystem services will be studied to identify the optimal scale, density and quality of green infrastructure for pollinators and natural enemies. The successful candidate will perform large-scale field experiments in agricultural landscapes in Germany to study the role of different green infrastructure elements for pollinator and antagonist diversity, crop visitation and predation rates, and yield quantity, quality and stability. The PhD position will be located at the Department of Animal Ecology and Tropical Biology, Biocenter, University of Würzburg, Germany (http://www.zoo3.biozentrum.uni-wuerzburg.de/en/).

Requirements
Applicants should have a MSc or Diploma degree in ecology or related disciplines and combine a strong interest and expertise in insect ecology, experimental field research, statistical data analysis (preferably in R) and scientific writing in English. Knowledge and interest in applied entomology, agroecology, plant-animal interactions, pollination and pest control are desirable. Practical skills in insect identification, GIS and performing ecological field experiments are highly valued; a driver license is required. The candidate is expected to work both individually and in team and to be able to integrate into an interdisciplinary and international project.


Salary and conditions

Start date: 1st April 2015 (subject to final approval by BMBF). The position is for three years. The doctoral thesis will be done as a series of English manuscripts.
