PhD position in Autoimmunity

Diese Stellenanzeige ist abgelaufen. Finden Sie hier zahlreiche ähnliche Jobs.

A PhD position in the field of Autoimmunity is available in the research group of Dr. Teichmann at the Biomedical Center, University of Bonn Medical School, Germany.

The innate immune system provides a first line of defense against pathogens and induces long-lasting, adaptive (T and B lymphocyte–mediated) immunity. Dysfunction of the innate immune system, however, can also lead to autoimmunity, which is characterized by lymphocytes attacking the body’s own tissue. Although the individual components (pathways, cell types etc.) of the innate immune system are increasingly well defined, their coordinate effects on the generation of T and B lymphocyte–mediated immune responses in complex diseases are not well understood. Our lab aims to understand how in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), an autoimmune disorder that causes inflammation in multiple organs and predominantly affects young women, different innate immune mechanisms functionally interact with each other in generating the self-directed adaptive immune response, thereby identifying novel therapeutic targets. We utilize a broad range of assays including 8-12 color flow cytometry, highly multiplex confocal microscopy and gene expression profiling to analyze transgenic mouse strains carrying conventional knock-outs, point mutations and tissue-specific gene deletions. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated and team-oriented with a strong interest in immunology and genetics. Experience with flow cytometry, histological and molecular biology techniques is advantageous. Experience in breeding and handling of genetically modified mice would also be useful. Candidates should hold a diploma or a master’s degree in Molecular Medicine, Biology, Pharmacy, Biochemistry or Veterinary Medicine. We offer a friendly and collaborative lab environment, supportive mentoring and a modern, well-equipped laboratory.

The position will start on 1 December 2014 or later, upon mutual agreement, and is initially available for 3 years (funded by the DFG). Salary will be according to the DFG guidelines. The University of Bonn is an equal opportunities employer. Preference will be given to suitably qualified women or persons with disabilities, all other considerations being equal.
