PhD position in Computational Biology

The Research Group Bioinformatics, Faculty of Biology, University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany, invites applications for a PhD position in Computational Biology with an emphasis on the analysis of large sets of sequence data (e.g. from ultra-deep sequencing experiments). The position will be available from July 1, 2015.

We (http://www.uni-due.de/bioinformatik) study with computational and theoretical methods molecular aspects of life, especially molecular mechanisms in evolution. The group is associated with the Center for Medical Biotechnology (http://www.uni-due.de/zmb), the Center of Water- and Environmental Research (http://www.uni-due.de/zwu), and the Center for Computational Sciences and Simulation (http://www.uni-due.de/ccss). The group works on persistent viral infections as a member of the transregional collaborative research centre TRR60 (http://www.uni-due.de/trr60/).

The main tasks of the successful applicant will be scientific research, namely the development of computational methods for sequence analysis, and the analysis of viral and human sequence data in the context of the research collaboration TRR60, especially in subprojects "HCV evolution - Impact of HCV sequence diversity on the immune response" and "The impact of hepatitis C virus on human B cells and its role in B cell lymphoproliferative disorders". In addition, the candidate will have a limited involvement in teaching.

The following requirements have to be fulfilled by successful candidates:
  • Degree in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, or a degree in mathematics or natural sciences with specialisation in computational biology (study programme of at least 8 semesters)
  • Good programming skills in one or more relevant languages of this field of research (e.g. Python, Java, C++)
  • Good knowledge of statistical methods
  • Good knowledge of theoretical molecular biology and strong interest in biological questions
  • Good team working and communication skills, including communication in English (written and spoken)
The successful applicant will be offered a contract over 2 years (extension possible) with a salary corresponding to 65% of 13 TV-L.
