PhD position in computational medicinal chemistry / structural biology
at the University of Würzburg in the International Graduate Program
"Receptor Dynamics: Emerging Paradigms for Novel Drugs"
We invite applications for a PhD position at the University of Würzburg within the International Graduate Program "Receptor Dynamics: Emerging Paradigms for Novel Drugs" (

The aim is to investigate receptor activation, ligand efficacy, and ligand residence time at adenosine receptors by molecular dynamics simulations and FRET-microscopy techniques.

The International Graduate Program is a joint initiative of the Universities of Würzburg, Bayreuth, Erlangen-Nürnberg, and Regensburg, and is funded by the Elite Network of Bavaria, Germany. The overall scientific focus is on dynamic features of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), the prime target for drug development and therapy, from the molecular level to microscopic and macroscopic functions.

The Graduate Program offers interdisciplinary training covering medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, structural biology, biophysics and biochemistry, as well as physiology. PhD positions are associated with a salary according to the German pay scale TV-L (65%).

The project for the offered PhD position is supervised by Prof. Christoph Sotriffer at the Institute of Pharmacy and Food Chemistry and will primarily consist in the advanced application of state-of-the-art simulation techniques for the investigation of receptor-ligand interactions. The work will be conducted in tight collaboration with the co-supervisor Prof. Carsten Hoffmann (Rudolf Virchow Center / Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology), where the complementary FRET-microscopy experiments on the investigated receptors are carried out.

Applicants should have an excellent MSc degree / diploma / State Exam in chemistry, biochemistry, biophysics,  pharmacy or a related discipline and a strong interest in computational methods. Further essential requirements are passion for interdisciplinary research and good English language skills.

Applications should be sent to Prof. Christoph Sotriffer by email ( as one PDF document. The application should include a letter of motivation detailing research interests and expertise, a CV, transcripts, and the contact information for at least two references. Review of applications will begin in September 2014.
