We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student at the Botanical Institute of the Christian-Albrechts University of Kiel and therefore invite applications for a:
 
 
PhD position that will focus on glycolytic routes in cyanobacteria
 
Cyanobacteria are highly fascinating prokaryotes that invented oxygenic photosynthesis and thereby changed life on Earth dramatically. Also today they belong to the main primary producers on our planet. A detailed understanding of their physiology is a prerequisite for estimations concerning the global carbon cycle. We are preferentially working with the model organism Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 that is accessible to genetic manipulation. It is the best studied cyanobacterium and most of its genes have been annotated. Site directed mutagenesis allows targeted studies of its physiology. The two main interests of our group are the hydrogen and the carbon metabolism of cyanobacteria. The applicant will be involved in a project that is financed by the DFG and deals with glycolytic routes in cyanobacteria.
It has long been known that cyanobacteria degrade glucose either via the oxidative pentose phosphate pathway (OPP) or the Embden-Meyerhoff Parnass pathway (EMP, often simply referred to as glycolysis). However, we found that additional, until date unrecognized bypasses operate in cyanobacteria that shall be characterized in detail. We aim to understand the physiological significance of the different pathways and to characterize selected enzymes biochemically.
 
Requirements:
Master degree in biochemistry or biology.
True scientific enthusiasm, curiosity, and intrinsic motivation.
Interest and knowledge in physiology.
A strong background in enzyme biochemistry and molecular biology is of advantage.
