PhD student position

A PhD student position is available immediately at the Institute of Genetics to study Hox gene control of nervous system development using Drosophila melanogaster as a model organism. Hox genes are evolutionarily conserved transcription factors that are employed in all bilaterian organisms at multiple stages of development to act as master regulators of body segment diversification. We are investigating how Hox proteins regulate neuronal differentiation to establish functional neural networks. In addition we aim to identify mechanisms that allow these broadly expressed proteins to exert different functions in individual cells, i.e. how the cell context influences their functional specificity.
We are seeking a highly motivated student with a solid background in developmental biology, molecular biology and/or biochemistry. The successful applicant will use a wide range of techniques (genetics, biochemistry, molecular and cell biology, cell culture, confocal and light microscopy) to investigate Hox functional specificity and how it contributes to the establishment of neural networks in different regions of the body. Experience in Drosophila genetics would be advantageous but is not a prerequisite. Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in biology, biochemistry or a related subject and should provide an excellent track record. The ability to work independently and to integrate into an international research team is essential.
Please submit your application in English or German (CV, copies of certificates, brief letter of motivation and contact information of two referees) by e-mail to:
