The Department of Genetics at the
Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena (Faculty of Biology and Pharmacy)
is seeking at the earliest opportunity
a scientific coworker to participate in the DFG-funded project
“Evolutionary developmental genetics of fruit opening in Brassicaceae”.
 
 
Main tasks:
Our group has an active research focus on the evolution of fruit development in Brassicaceae, involving national and international cooperations (e.g., see www. Seedadapt.eu/index.php/team; Lenser and Theißen, 2013, Plant J. 76, 545; Mühlhausen et al., 2013, Plant J. 73, 824). The main task of the successful candidate will be to identify the molecular mechanisms leading to the evolution of indehiscent fruits in the plant species Lepidium appelianum. This will require using a multitude of molecular techniques, including the analysis of mRNA and protein expression of candidate genes, transgene technology, bioinformatics analysis of genomic sequences, and transcriptomics.
 
 
Professional skills:
We are searching for a scientist with a master or diploma degree in biology, biochemistry or a related field. A solid background in molecular biology, genetics and respective techniques (molecular cloning, PCR, etc.) is essential. Practical experience in plant molecular biology especially with Agrobacterium-mediated transformation, gene-expression analysis (Northern, RT-PCR, in situ hybridization) and with analyzing RNA-Seq data is advantageous.
 
Personality:
The successful candidate should have a strong interest in basic research on developmental and evolutionary biology of plants. Experience with scientific publications is advantageous. Since the research project will be carried out in close cooperation with apl. Prof. Klaus Mummenhoff, University of Osnabrück, Department of Biology/Chemistry, group of Systematic Botany, where a second researcher will be hired, communication and cooperation skills are strongly required.
 
The position is a part-time work (65%), remunerated under state salary scheme TV-L E13 and limited to a term of three years. In addition to the project-related work there is the possibility for scientific qualification (obtaining a PhD).
