Streß-regulation of mitochondria: Basic principles and pathological relevance

Our lab is interested in stress-regulation of mitochondria and its pathological relevance. We identified several pathways, which impact this stress-regulation and serve as potent disease-modifers in disorders associated with mitochondrial dysfunction.

In this project, we will identify and assess several novel cellular pathways on how to stimulate these disease-modifying pathways in model systems and describe their action spectrum on a cellular and molecular level.

We are dynamic group which is integrated in an excellent, collaborative and international scientific environment at the Institute for Genetics and Cluster of Excellence: Cellular Stress Responses in Aging-Associated Diseases (CECAD) at the University of Cologne. To complement our team, we are looking for a highly motivated

Ph.D. student (TV-L E13/2)

with an interest in the molecular basis of mitochondrial metabolism. Excellent research and training conditions and the opportunity to learn a broad range of methods while working on a topic highly relevant for translational medicine will be offered. The ideal candidate is a highly motivated, team-oriented student with strong interest in disease pathogenesis and preferably with a background in biochemistry, cell or molecular biology. Experience with cell culture and model organism experimentation, biochemistry or molecular biology techniques (e.g. cloning, overexpression, protein purification, site-directed mutagenesis) is advantageous. Candidates should hold a diploma or master's degree in biochemistry, biology, or related areas.
