GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation of public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90 %) and the state of Schleswig-Holstein (10 %) and is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine sciences. In the frame of recently funded European projects, the research unit Marine Natural Products Chemistry / GEOMAR Centre for Marine Biotechnology (GEOMAR-Biotech) within the research division Marine Ecology, is offering a post as

Natural Product Chemist / Project manager (f/m)

starting on 15th September 2016.

Job Description:

We are seeking an experienced candidate with demonstrated expertise in marine natural product chemistry/biotechnology and project management to carry out project management and research tasks in two European blue biotechnology projects funded by INTERREG BSR (Baltic Blue Biotechnology Alliance) and Horizon2020 (BLUE&GREEN). The holder of this post will perform a range of chemical and biotechnological research tasks, including generation and dereplication of marine extracts, purification and structure elucidation of natural products, process development and other biotechnological applications. Additional duties comprise project management of the EU funded projects, including establishment of a biomaterial info point in the Baltic Sea region, scientific partner management, involvement in surveys and database development/management and reporting.

Close interactions with research groups from a broad range of scientific disciplines as well as industrial partners and other stakeholders across Europe will be expected. Involvement and attendance in project meetings, workshops/summer schools, laboratory training and various brokerage/publicity events will be required.

GEOMAR Centre for Marine Biotechnology (GEOMAR-Biotech), a state-of-the-art research centre carrying out both basic and applied research, is part of the Research Unit Marine Natural Product Chemistry (RU MN) at GEOMAR. The research topics at RU MN/GEOMAR-Biotech range from fundamental marine chemical ecology to exploration of chemical components and biotechnological potential of marine micro- and macroorganisms for biodiscovery and development as medicines, food ingredients or for cosmeceuticals.

The Research Unit Marine Natural Product Chemistry (http://www.geomar.de/en/research/fb3/fb3-mn/) is part of the Research Division Marine Ecology of GEOMAR. It is equipped with state-of-the-art chemical facilities including accelerated solvent extraction system, FT-IR, polarimeter, UPLC-QTOF-MS-coupled with DESI-Imaging Mass Spectrometry, HPLC-DAD-MS, HPLC-HRMS, GC-MS and the related compound and spectral databases, as well as microbiology/biotechnology facilities and over 50 in vitro biological assays. The GEOMAR has full access to the Department of Chemistry and their high-resolution (cryo-) NMR facilities. We are members of several excellence clusters, such as The Future Ocean, Kiel Life Sciences and several international consortia.

Qualifications required:
  • PhD degree in natural products chemistry, (marine biotechnology) and or related field
  • Competence and experience in natural product- and analytical chemistry techniques for chemical profiling, dereplication, isolation and structure elucidation of marine natural products by HPLC, LC-MS, NMR and other techniques
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in marine biotechnology (e.g. fermentation), preferably combined with experience outside academia (e.g. companies)
  • Previous experience in project management and transnational cooperation
  • Experience with data management, databases, surveys and mapping studies
  • Experience in writing project reports, publications, conference papers and other types of dissemination and outreach activities
  • Demonstrated skills and time management in multiple tasks
  • Fluency and excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Planning and organisational skills, prioritisation of multiple tasks, meeting strict deadlines
  • Independency, capability of creative- and critical thinking, decision making, problem solving with discretion, self-motivation and curiosity
Former participation in EU funded projects is highly advantageous. Previous interaction with industry is highly desirable.

This is a full time position available from 15th September 2016, for the funding period until 28th February 2019. The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class 13 TVöD of the German salary rate for public employees. The position cannot be split.
