Doctoral Position (50%)
starting October 1st, 2016 for three years.

The project focuses on microbial adaptation to environmental conditions in the host. Successful candidates will investigate virulence traits of the opportunistic pathogenic yeast Candida albicans.
The Junior Research Group Host Fungal Interfaces performs state of the art research to investigate the pathogenesis of C. albicans, the most common organism associated with fungal sepsis. C. albicans is under most circumstances a fairly ubiquitous commensal of the human microflora. In certain cases the fungus can become pathogenic. The aim is to identify factors and conditions that foster the transition from a harmless colonizer to an aggressive pathogen. With this regard the research group focuses on the formation of biofilms that are highly resistant to antibiotic treatment and lead to a large variety of systemic infections.

Your profile: We are seeking for a highly motivated and technically skilled doctoral candidate with a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Life Sciences (e.g. Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry) and a strong background in microbiology, molecular biology and/or biochemistry. Experiences in fungal biology/genetics are preferable but not required. Applicants should have very good communication skills in English and a high motivation to perform team-oriented as well as independent work.

We offer: The successful candidate will be hosted in the newly established independent Junior Research Group Host Fungal Interfaces. We offer a multifaceted scientific project supported by excellent technical facilities, a place in an international, committed team, as well as strong scientific collaborations. As a PhD student, you will have the opportunity to be integrated in the well-recognized graduate school JSMC (www.jsmc.uni-jena.de), which offer extensive mentoring support and provide additional training through a structured onsite programme. Training will include key areas of science and technology, and complementary skills.

The position is a part-time work (50%), remunerated under state salary scheme TV-L E13 (salary agreement for public service employees) and limited to a term of three years. Severely disabled applicants with equal qualification and aptitude are given preferential consideration.
