Ph.D. student in photoreceptors & optogenetics

The laboratory of ‘Sensory Photoreceptors’ at the Institute of Biochemistry at the University Bayreuth is currently seeking to fill a Ph.D. student position. Sensory photoreceptors not only mediate manifold physiological adaptations in response to light, but also they serve as light-regulated actuators in optogenetics, i.e. the non-invasive, reversible and spatiotemporally precise control of living cells with light. In addition to investigating the structure, function and signaling mechanism of naturally occurring photoreceptors, we strive to engineer novel photoreceptors with customized light-regulated function. Our laboratory employs a wide array of experimental techniques including molecular biology, protein biochemistry, optical spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, protein engineering, high-throughput screening, flow cytometry and cell culture (cf. Pubmed entries of our recent publications: 23746806, 25373866, 24889611, 26137467, 26648256).

The Institute of Biochemistry is situated in a brand-new building at the University of Bayreuth and is equipped with cutting-edge instrumentation for biochemistry, protein crystallography, optical spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and flow cytometry. In addition to offering excellent training and research infrastructure, the institute and the university provide a highly interdisciplinary and stimulating environment for biochemical/biophysical projects. The Ph.D. candidate will be enrolled in the BayNAT graduate school (http://www.baynat.uni-bayreuth.de/en/phds/index.php). The anticipated starting date is March 1st 2016 or later, and salary is according to TV-L E13 (50%).

The ideal candidate holds an excellent university degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Biophysics, Chemistry or a related discipline. Enthusiasm for experimental research, ability to work in a team and good English skills are expected. Training and prior research experience in one or several of the following subjects are of decisive advantage: molecular biology, protein biochemistry and crystallography, biomolecular spectroscopy and cell culture.
