We are currently seeking motivated and talented individuals to join our team as PhD students at the Department of Biochemistry of the University of Bayreuth. Sensory photoreceptors are vital to the survival of manifold organisms as they mediate crucial physiological and behavorial adaptations to incident light. In an analytic approach, we strive to unravel the inner workings and molecular mechanisms of sensory photoreceptors. We also take a synthetic approach by constructing novel photoreceptors which serve as hitherto unavailable light-regulated actuators. Such actuators are particularly valuable in optogenetics, the manipulation of cellular events by light with supreme spatiotemporal control, minimal invasiveness and full reversibility. To accomplish these goals, we employ a diverse assortment of biochemical and biophysical techniques spanning molecular biology, protein biochemistry, spectroscopy, protein engineering, high-throughput screening and X-ray crystallography. The Department of Biochemistry is housed in a brand-new building at the University of Bayreuth and is equipped with top-notch instrumentation for biochemistry, protein crystallography, optical spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and flow cytometry. In addition to offering excellent training and research infrastructure, the institute and the university provide a highly interdisciplinary and stimulating environment for biochemical/biophysical projects. The PhD candidate will be enrolled in the BayNAT graduate school (http://www.baynat.uni-bayreuth.de/en/phds/index.php) with an anticipated starting date of June 1st 2016 or later. The project is funded by a DFG research grant, and salary is according to the TV-L scale.

The ideal candidate holds an excellent M. Sc. or diploma degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Biophysics, Chemistry or a related discipline. Enthusiasm for experimental research, ability to work in a team and good English skills are expected. Training and prior research experience in one or several of the following subjects are of decisive advantage: molecular biology, protein biochemistry and crystallography, biomolecular spectroscopy and cell culture.
