The research group „Molecular and Translational Neurology“

in the Department of Neurogenetics at the Max-Planck-Institute of experimental Medicine in Göttingen/Germany invites applications for a

PhD student

(f/m)

in Neuroscience (Charcot-Marie-Tooth Research)

08/2016

The main goal of our group is to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease, with specific emphasis on preclinical therapy trials (see refs: Stassart et al., 2013 Nat Neuro, Fledrich et al., Nat Med 2014, Prukop et al., AJHG 2014).

The specific focus of the project will be on the identification of the intracellular sorting and interaction of the underlying disease protein PMP22 and its functional consequences with respect to the normal function of this protein and the role in the disease pathogenesis. Special interest will be given to epigenetic modulation of PMP22 and other proteins and its effect regarding disease severity in rodent animal models and humans. Identified modifications will also be tested for suitability as biomarker and drug target. Primary methods will include different protein purification methods, biochemical separation techniques, therapeutic treatment of and phenotype analyses with mice and rats, histology (light microscopy, electron microscopy), cell culture and molecular biological methods such as Western blot and qPCR. All techniques are well established in the lab.

Applicants must have a MSc (or equivalent) and should have a background in molecular biology and biochemistry. Applicants should be fluent in English and possess good communication and team working skills.

We offer:
  • Working in an international team within a stimulating research environment and in very well equipped laboratories
  • Association to the Göttinger Graduate School for Neurosciences, Biophysics and Molecular Biosciences (GGNB, 6 different doctoral programs)
  • Employment, payment and social benefits are determined by the Public Sector Collective Agreement (Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst)
The MPG is an equal opportunity employer. The MPG is committed to employing more disabled individuals and especially encourages them to apply.

Interested candidates should send their applications (CV, publication list, summary of research interests and names of 2 referees) until 30.06.2016 as a single pdf document to: schmalstieg@em.mpg.de
