The Department Biological Oceanography of the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde (IOW) is offering a part-time (65%)

research scientist

position starting on the 01.11.2016. Remuneration is paid in accordance with the TV-L salary scale at level EG 13-Ost monthly gross salary. The employment is temporary for 3 years.

The IOW is an independent institute of the Leibniz Association, engaged in system analysis of coastal and marginal seas, with special focus on the Baltic Sea. The scientists of the four departments (Physical Oceanography, Marine Chemistry, Biological Oceanography and Marine Geology) cooperate within the framework of a joint research program.

Job description
When and why do marine bacteria exchange components? Do the observed interactions correspond to the genetic code? Can models describe and predict exchanges? In the framework of an international project funded by the Human Frontiers Science Program the interaction of bacteria will be analyzed. Lab and field studies, bioinformatics and modelling with cell size resolution will be performed. Several scientist from different institutes (IOW; Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries, Berlin, Germany; Boston University, USA; University of Haifa, Israel) will be working together in this project.

The candidate will depict the exchange of components on cell level by employing secondary ion mass spectrometry (NanoSIMS). His/her main objectives will be cultivation of the microorganisms, stable isotope labeling experiments and preparing samples for the NanoSIMS. In addition the analysis and presentation of results on project meeting as well as workshops and conferences will be done by the candidate. To achieve the goals of the project a close cooperation with the project partners and the ability to travel and work in the partner laboratories is necessary. If the position is filled by a PhD candidate a promotion within 3 years is expected. Main working place will be the IOW.

The candidate should hold a good/excellent university degree in a microbial and a marine field. Basic knowledge in cultivation of microorganisms, microbial exchange of components, FISH- and NanoSIMS techniques, genetics, modelling and statistical procedures will be appreciated. Good to excellent knowledge of the English language
