The Department of Experimental Biomedicine, Rudolf Virchow Center/University Hospital Würzburg has an opening for

1 PhD student position (TV-L 13, 65 %)

to investigate thrombo-inflammation during hepatic reperfusion injury.

Reperfusion injury is the tissue damage caused when blood supply returns to the tissue after a period of ischemia or lack of oxygen, e.g. following recanalization in ischemic stroke or upon liver transplantation. The tissue damage is due to overshooting thrombotic and inflammatory processes and insufficient resolution of inflammation. The precise cellular interplay underlying reperfusion injury is, however, only partially understood.
This PhD project will combine murine models of hepatic injury with advanced imaging techniques to dissect the thrombo-inflammatory pathomechanisms underlying reperfusion injury and the subsequent resolution of inflammation. Light sheet fluorescence microscopy and intravital fluorescence (confocal and two-photon) microscopy will be applied in order to visualize complex cellular interactions between platelets, leukocytes and endothelial cells in the ischemic liver. Besides these key imaging techniques, functional cellular assays as well as biochemical and molecular biology approaches will be part of the PhD project.
The PhD student will join the research team of Dr. David Stegner at the Department of Experimental Biomedicine (Chair: Prof. Dr. Bernhard Nieswandt). We offer an excellent scientific environment, but also a pleasant working atmosphere. As a PhD student, you will furthermore have the opportunity to become part of the ‘Graduate School of Life Sciences’ (GSLS) funded by the Excellence Initiative of the German government (http://www.graduateschools.uni-wuerzburg.de/life_sciences).
Suitable candidates should hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in a life sciences subject with a strong interest in molecular and cell biology, mouse models and different imaging techniques. Excellent lab skills and good knowledge of the English language are a prerequisite.
The position will start on March 15th, 2016 or later. Disabled applicants will be preferentially considered in case of equivalent qualification. Part-time work is generally possible.
