SAMOSS is an international Marie Curie network‐project funded by the European Union that started on October 1st 2013 with partners in Austria, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Spain and The Netherlands (

Its overall task is the development of complex sensor systems for multiple chemical parameters in real samples combined with signal enhancement strategies. The network focus is placed on research and development of new materials for optochemical sensing and microfluidic applications, microfluidic sample handling modules, multifunctional elements, analytical signal amplification and innovative detection systems.  

Within this network, the UCM Chemical Optosensors & Applied Photochemistry Group (GSOLFA), a multidisciplinary research team with 25+ years’ experience in all aspects related to advanced optical chemical sensors R+D, offers a PhD student position to work on an individual project in close cooperation with the SAMOSS partner institutions.
The researcher will also benefit from the network training program provided through a number of training events, as well as by local training offered by Complutense University of Madrid (UCM).

Work description:
  • Development and implementation of optical sensing platforms based on new transduction schemes and recognition elements for rapid, sensitive and specific detection of phytophathogenic fungi species and their mycotoxic metabolites in foodstuff.
  • Design and preparation of recognition elements.  
  • Evaluation of new label‐based signal amplification methods and label‐free sensing schemes.
  • System application and validation.  

  • Master and Bachelor degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or closely related fields that empower the candidate to enter directly a PhD Program in Spain.  
  • Excellent English level (written, spoken).
  • Experience in molecular biology, biotechnology or biosensors will be a bonus.

The employment in this position should begin March‐April 2015 for the duration of 24 months including secondments to partner institutions.

C(2012)4561 of 9 July 2012) as well as full social benefits.  

As a general rule, applicants should be nationals of a EU member, associate or candidate state, except Spain. Moreover, the applicant should not have resided or carried out her/his main activity in Spain for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to her/his appointment.
