The mission of the BAM Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing is

is offering a position in Berlin-Steglitz
 
Ph.D. student (f/m) in Chemistry, Food Chemistry or Physics

to begin quickest possible
with 65% of the regular working time
temporary contract for 18 months, with the option on additional 18 months
 
 
Area of responsibility:

Responsibilities comprise the noninvasive in-situ analysis of pigments and binding agents in stained glass using X-ray fluorescence analysis, UV/VIS spectroscopy, FTIR reflection spectroscopy, and Raman microscopy. The position is part of the research project “Stained Glass Painting as a Technique of Classical Modernism 1905-1955”, which is supported by the Volkswagenstiftung.
 
Job Requirements:

We are looking for an applicant either with a completed degree in Chemistry, Food Chemistry or Physics with a strong interest in art-technological and material-analytical issues or with a completed degree in Art Restoration with deepened knowledge in the field of Analytical Chemistry.
 
Practical experience in the aforementioned methods of investigation and solid knowledge of the production and use of historical painting materials are advantageous.
 
The substantive and scientific supervision of the doctorate will be carried out in cooperation with the Doerner Institut of the Bayerischen Staatsgemäldesammlungen, Munich.

The capacity for independent scientific work, willingness to engage in interdisciplinary cooperation with national and international museum partners, and secure oral and written mastery of German and English are preconditions. We also expect a high degree of organizational talent, flexibility, mobility, and very good EDP skills. A Class 3 driver’s license is required.
