Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic candidate with clearly demonstrated expertise in marine natural product chemistry to join our Research Unit. The holder of this post will perform a range of research tasks including sampling, generation and dereplication of extracts, purification and structure elucidation of their bioactive molecules by modern analytical methods.
Current research foci of our group encompass discovery of drug leads and functional ingredients from coastal and deep-sea marine invertebrates, microorganisms and seaweeds in the areas of pharmaceutical, nutrition and cosmetics; marine metabolomics; and chemical ecology. The successful candidate will be involved in various projects in these directions. Assistance in the collection of marine materials, which may involve several weeks of expeditions, supervision of postgraduate/undergraduate students, participation in teaching and preparations of third-party funding proposals will be expected The occupant will interact and collaborate with a broad range of scientific disciplines.
Our laboratory has state-of-the-art chemical facilities, including DAD-ELSD-HPLC, DAD-MS-HPLC, LC-MS, HRMS-HPLC, GC-MS, FPLC, FCPC, spectral analytics and the related compound and spectral databases. The GEOMAR has full access to the Department of Chemistry and their high resolution NMR facilities.  Our in-house microbial culturing facilities span from small to large-scale (300L fermenter), as well as access to sequencing facilities. We are also members of several multi-institutional excellence clusters, such as The Future Ocean and international consortia.
Qualifications required:
  • A PhD in marine natural products chemistry
  • Demonstrated competence and experience in analytical techniques for profiling and dereplication of marine natural products by HPLC, GC-MS, LC-MS, NMR and others
  • Proficiency in commercial and in house databases
  • Extensive competence and experience in purification of diverse types of natural products (by HPLC and other chromatographic methods)
  • Demonstrated experience in structure elucidation of marine natural products by high field NMR, HRMS, LC-MS, UV, IR
  • Scientific publication in high-ranking journals and dissemination of results at conferences
  • Demonstrated experience in writing publications, conference papers and research proposals
  • Scuba diving licence and some collection experience
  • A full driving licence
  • Fluency in spoken and written English and excellent oral and written communication skills 
  • Planning and organisational skills, prioritisation of multiple tasks, meeting strict deadlines
  • Excellent project and laboratory management skills in multiple tasks
  • Capability of creative- and critical thinking, independent thought and experimentation, decision making, problem solving with discretion, self-motivation and curiosity.
This is a full-time position, starting 1st March 2015 (or as soon as possible thereafter), The position cannot be split and is available for 3 years. Upon successful review, it can be made permanent. The salary depends on qualification up to the class 13 TVÖD of the German salary rate for public employees.
