Applications are invited for
 
2 funded PhD positions
 
 (salary grade 13 TV-L / 50%; fixed-term work contract for 3 years; extension for another six months possible) in the group of Martin Steinhart (Institute for Chemistry of New Materials, University of Osnabrück). The start date is 1 September 2015 or later. 
 
Project Aims and Assignments:
The successful candidates will be involved in the project “Insect-inspired capillary nano­stamping (IICN)”, which is being funded as ERC Consolidator Grant by the European Research Council. The project “Insect-inspired capillary nanostamping” aims at closing the gap between scanning probe microscopy and state-of-the-art soft lithography. Possible PhD topics include “Massively parallel liquid bridge-guided formation of nanorod arrays by IICN”, “IICN-derived large-area arrays of sub-attolitre mesoporous nanoparticles for catalysis” or “Ordered porous membranes by IICN nanodroplet lithography”. The University of Osnabrück provides experimental state-of-the-art facilities including electron microscopy (field emission scanning electron microsope equipped with focused ion beam unit, transmission electron microscopes), X-ray diffractometry (single crystals, powders, thin films and texture analysis), scanning force microscopy and the Center for Advanced Light Microscopy Osnabrück (CALMOS).
 
Academic requirements:
Applicants should hold a Master degree in chemistry, physics, materials science, polymer science or similar subjects.
