A Ph. D. position is available at the Department of Chemistry at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg, Germany for a period of 3 years starting from the 01.09.2016
This position is connected with a realization of a DFG research project “Determining structural changes in model membranes of Gram-negative bacteria during their interaction with antimicrobial peptides: spectroscopic and microscopic study under electrochemical control”. Within this project models of lipid membranes will be prepared using Langmuir-Blodgett method. Electrochemical techniques (voltammetry, coulometry) as well as polarization modulation infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (PM IRRAS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) with electrochemical control will be used to characterize the changes in the membrane structure and morphology caused by an interacting peptide. This project will be realized in cooperation with Prof. Dr. S. Sek at the University of Warsaw, Poland, where in situ AFM studies will be performed and a mobility between students involved in the realization of this project is expected. A good knowledge of English is essential for a successful realization of this project. This project will be realized under the supervision of Dr. Izabella Brand at the Institute of Chemistry in the laboratory of Prof. Dr. G. Wittstock.
Requirements are a completed Msc. (or equivalent) in chemistry or biophysics. A successful candidate shall have experience in electrochemistry. In addition experience in methods of modification of solid surfaces by soft matter and/ or IR or AFM studies of the structure and morphology of soft films is an advantage.
The Carl von Ossietzky University aims for an increase of the ratio of women within its scientific staff. Therefore, women are encouraged to apply. Likewise people with medical handicaps should be preferred.
