PhD position in DNA nanotechnology

starting end 2016 for three years within the field of DNA origami nanotechnology.

Project title: DNA nanochambers for proteins

Project Outline: This project aims at the design and realization of customized DNA origami nanochambers for selective protein encapsulation and release under a defined external input. The nanochambers will be functionalized in their inner cavity with ligands, supposed to target selected sites exposed on the protein surface. Varying the size of the chamber, as well as the number and symmetry distribution of the inner-pointing ligands we aim at developing a method for trapping a desired protein in an artificial microenvironment, thus offering the possibility to modulate for example protein life-time, activity and oligomerization state. In a second phase, the nanochambers will be also functionalized on the outer surface with fluorophores or recognition motifs for tracking or delivery applications.
 
Our requirements
  • A Master degree (or equivalent) in chemistry, physics or related natural and life sciences. Candidates about to obtain their degree are welcome to apply.
  • A strong motivation in learning DNA design and single-molecule techniques.  
  • Expertise in atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy (although not necessary are of advantage)
  • The ideal candidate should be willing to work in a young research team and conduct research that covers multiple scientific disciplines embedded in the infrastructure of the ZMB
  • To be able to perform team-oriented as well as independent work
  • Very good communication and writing skills (English)
We offer you a challenging interdisciplinary project, at the interface of chemistry, physics and biology, exploring the emerging field of DNA nanotechnology with state-of-the-art instrumentation, either at the ZMB center or in cooperation with our partner institutes. As a PhD student, you will be a member of the Collaborative Research Center Graduate School of the DFG (CRC 1093 - Essen), which offers an excellent structured postgraduate education.
 
The successful candidate will be hosted in the Junior Research Group Bionanotechnology (Dr. Barbara Saccà). Salary is paid according to German TV-L (salary agreement for public service employees). The University of Duisburg-Essen is an equal opportunity employer.
