Electrochaea was founded in 2010 as a spin-off company from academic research in the United States. Together with our strategic partners and investors, we are developing a novel energy storage technology known as power-to-gas. In connection with an equity investment by several high-profile venture capitalists, the company has recently relocated its headquarters from the United States to Germany (Munich). For the future growth of the company at our operational centers in Munich and Copenhagen, we are looking for self-starting employees who are willing to work in a fast moving and innovative environment with international and highly motivated peers.

The core of Electrochaea’s technology is a two-step process: In the first step, electricity is used to produce hydrogen by means of electrolysis. In the second step, this hydrogen is combined with carbon dioxide and biocatalytically reacted to methane by a culture of methanogenic archaea, which are anaerobic microbes. The methane produced in this process can be injected into existing natural gas infrastructure for transportation and storage. This process allows Electrochaea and its partners to store underutilized renewable electrical energy in the form of natural gas.

Munich, Germany (southwest)

Description of Position
The Analytical Chemist´s primary responsibility will be to establish analytical methods and strategies related to small and large scale bioreactors. Core duties of this position include:
  • Design and execute experiments related to the quantitative analysis of volatiles and solutes in Electrochaea’s biological reactors
  • Develop and implement methods for measuring all relevant components of bioreactor educts and products including automated sampling protocols
  • Work with engineering team to develop process control instrumentation and control logic for Electrochaea’s commercial and demonstration scale systems
  • Operate and train others in the use of analytical equipment e.g. GC-MS, GC other gas analysis equipment
  • Support the operation of bench top bioreactors including in particular sampling for analytical chemistry purposes
  • Support design of new and innovative bioreactors from the analytical point of view
  • Evaluation and implementation of novel analytical equipment based on future requirements
  • Analysis of bioreactor production efficiencies
  • Communicate and deliver results within client projects and between all levels of the company
  • Implement Quality Assurance processes (and certification)
  • Develop standard methods for headspace analysis of bioreactor gases
  • Calibrate laboratory analytic equipment, including analog and digital devices for bioreactors, molecular biology and general reagent preparation  
  • PhD in chemical engineering, analytical chemistry or related discipline, with a minimum of 3 years post-doctoral or professional experience
  • Excellent English and/or German language skills
  • High degree of interpersonal skills and effective communication skills
  • Strong background in process controlling related to bioreactors is an advantage
  • Demonstrated ability to work in cross-disciplinary teams
