the position starts as soon as possible and is fixed-term to 31.10.2017. Subject to the continued third-party funding of the cluster after 2017, the extension of the contract may be possible. The period of employment is governed by § 2 Fixed-Term Research Contracts Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz – WissZeitVG). The position offers the chance to obtain further academic qualification (e.g. PhD).
Position and Requirements
We are currently building up the new “Networked Embedded Systems Group” with the long-term vision to build highly reliable and efficient wireless communication and runtime systems for realizing dependable Cyber-Physical Systems – the computing revolution of the 21st century. Low-power wireless technology promises reduced costs, improved safety, and unprecedented flexibility. Current low-power wireless primitives, however, do not fully exploit the broadcast nature of wireless, which limits their performance and reliability. The goal of this PhD research is to design a communication primitive for ultra-low power wireless embedded systems that overcomes this limitation. The successful candidate will: systematically analyze the reliability and efficiency of synchronous wireless transmissions depending on network, radio, packet, and physical-layer characteristics; design a novel low-power wireless primitive based on the developed understanding; build a real prototype of this primitive in state-of-the-art hardware and/or software.
We aim at attracting the best talent in the respective research fields and look for: a university Master’s degree (or equivalent) and an outstanding performance in a field related to Electrical Engineering and Computer Science; a proven strong background in wireless communications and signal processing; experience in hardware/RF design and low-level programming in C; ideally experience with FPGAs, software-defined radios, and embedded systems; highly motivated to work on challenging research problems for several years, and to publish the original results at top-tier international conferences and scientific journals; very good interpersonal and communication skills; in particular, the ability to effectively work in collaborative research efforts; an independent, target- and solution-driven work attitude; inter- and multidisciplinary thinking; strong motivation and interest to join one of the most ambitious interdisciplinary research clusters; fluency in English - written and oral.
