The Environmental-Physics group (umphy) at the Centre for Applied Geoscience (Uni-versity of Tübingen, Germany) studies turbulent atmospheric flows using small automatic-ally operating unmanned aircraft (UAV), ground-station networks, and numerical models. Our main interests are the turbulent energy and momentum exchange between the earthsurface and the lower atmosphere (boundary-layer meteorology), and the interaction ofturbulent flows with buildings, wind turbines and orography. We develop fast meteorologic-al sensors (especially for our UAV), calibration methods and software for data analysis.Currently, we are looking for a young researcher (PhD student) who will support us in thefield of measurement technology especially for our UAV:

Meteorologist, Physicist, Engineer (PhD student)

The tasks include
  • performing own research in the field of boundary-layer meteorology and turbulenceunder continuous supervision
  • ... by using our ground stations and research UAV
  • maintenance and further development of our airborne measurement systems (withfocus on turbulent wind vector, temperature, humidity, aerosol, trace gas)
  • teaching bachelor and master students in tutorials and laboratory courses
  • supervision of student theses
The ideal candidate studied atmospheric science, physics, electronics or fluid mechanicswith a strong experimental focus and has already experience in:
  • environmental measurement technology and sensors
  • data analysis and statistics in atmospheric science
  • atmospheric physics, boundary-layer meteorology and turbulence theory
The position is available from 1 February (2015) on, and will be open until filled. We offerthe opportunity to write a PhD thesis. Salary will be according to the German public ser-vice (75 % of TVL E13; about 31,500 € p.a., before tax and social insurances; around 20.000 € p.a. after deductions).
