At TU Dresden, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Department of Geosciences, Institute of Planetary Geodesy, the Chair of Geodetic Earth System Research is, under the condition of release of third-party funding, looking for a
Research Fellow / PhD Position
 (Subject to personal qualification employees are remunerated according to salary group E 13 TV-L)
for the Topic Mass changes of the ocean, of continental ice and continental water from GRACE satellite gravimetry with an envisaged start at 1st November 2016. The position entails 75% of the fulltime weekly hours and is limited for 3 years. The period of employment is governed by Fixed Term Research Contracts Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz - WissZeitVG). The position offers the chance to obtain further academic qualification (e.g. PhD).
Tasks: Development and application of methods to use time-variable gravity field information from the satellite gravimetry mission GRACE, as well as from complementary information from geodetic observations and modeling, for a consistent determination of global and regional ocean mass variations, continental ice and water mass variations; stochastic characterization of related uncertainties; comparison of results with independent (observation-based and model-based) estimates of mass contributions to the sea level budget; integration of the work into projects funded by the European Space Agency addressing ice sheet mass balance and sea level budget, carried out in international and interdisciplinary consortia.
Requirements: university degree (master or diploma) in geodesy or a related subject (like geophysics, physics, mathematics); very good analytical skills; programming experience; commitment to acting in an interdisciplinary and international context. Additional assets are: Experience with the analysis of GRACE Level-2 products and with the analysis and combination of results from additional geodetic space techniques; experience with methods of parameter estimation and stochastic modeling; experience with oceanographic, glaciological, hydrological or geodynamic investigations.
