The Center for Molecular Medicine Cologne (CMMC) is a multidisciplinary center at the University of Cologne providing a forum that brings together physician scientists with basic researchers from the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences to perform competitive basic, disease-oriented research. The Center for Molecular Medicine Cologne invites applications from enthusiastic, motivated individuals for the Junior Research Group (JRG VII) “Systems Biology of Chromatin” of Dr. Argyris Papantonis
 
One PhD position (65%)
 
The position is immediately available for 36 months with the possibility of extension.
 
What we are looking for:
Ideal candidates are expected to hold degrees in a relevant scientific field, have a strong interest in genome and/or RNA biology, excellent command of English, and the ability to work as members of a group. Experience in transcriptional studies (e.g., 3C, ChIP) and in silico analysis of high-throughput datasets will be considered as an advantage. Successful candidates will be given the opportunity to develop their own research interests in an inter-disciplinary environment.
 
Research overview:
Our work focuses on primary human cells. We wish to uncover the rules governing gene expression in response to developmental and extra-cellular cues. Genome architecture is thought to be a major determinant in this. What we would like to understand is how chromatin folds to accommodate responses to such cues in all four dimensions: 3-D space and time. In the end, we anticipate these rules to be general ones, which – once deciphered – will allow us to predict how a cell might respond during disease, development, or aging.
 
Research Environment:
CMMC, along with its partner institutes such as the Cologne Cluster of Excellence in Cellular Stress Responses in Aging-associated Diseases, Cologne Center for Genomics and Max-Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing all located in the same campus, provides a vibrant scientific environment. Therefore, the CMMC´s JRG for Systems Biology of Chromatin is placed perfectly where basic research meets cutting-edge translational science.
 
The positions are based on the German TV-L salary conditions.
