Bauhaus Luftfahrt is an interdisciplinary research institution funded by the four aerospace companies Airbus Group, Industrieanlagen-Betriebsgesellschaft (IABG), Liebherr-Aerospace and MTU Aero Engines as well as grants of the Bavarian Ministry for Economic Affairs, Media, Energy and Technology. The non-profit association is an internationally-oriented think tank. The team of around 50 employees deals with the future of mobility in general and with the future of air travel in particular. The goal of the research work is to consider the complex system of aviation from different points of view. In every project, the technical, economic, social and ecological aspects are considered holistically.

Motivation
The fleet planning process adopted by most airlines is based on a forecast of air travel demand within a long term scenario planning horizon of about 10 years. Travel demand has to be translated into a network capacity the airline plans to offer through the utilization of certain aircraft capacities. To accommodate demand an airline’s fleet needs to be developed over time typically requiring changes in number, size and types of aircraft esp. via phasing out old aircraft and acquiring new ones. However the process of translating demand into fleet development is not straightforward, as different factors have to be considered. The overall goal of the Master Thesis is to identify and determine the key factors in this process for use in a fleet development model.

Objectives and Proceedings
Depending on the strategy adopted by airlines, their productivities may vary significantly. The master thesis is designed to determine the distribution of productivities of aircraft types operated by major airlines at a worldwide level. Therefore, factors contributing to aircraft productivity (esp. stage length, route seat capacities, and flight frequencies) will be analyzed from historical planned flight data. Based on that, and using airlines’ fleet information, the distribution of planned aircraft type productivity can be obtained for these airlines. This will also help in determining the performance spectrum of the global airline industry and their routes.

Work Packages
The candidate will:
» Perform a short literature survey on aircraft productivity, fleet planning and airline performance
» Analyze planned flight database to identify the major airlines satisfying the most significant global air travel demand
» Determine quantitatively the above-listed factors contributing to aircraft productivity
» In addition, analyze fleet database to determine aircraft type productivity distributions across airline routes for use in global fleet development modeling

Requirements
» Interest in air transportation systems
» Knowledge of statistics and statistical tools like R, STATA or SPSS
