PhD Scholarship
for the collaborative PhD project
“Statistical analysis and implications of microRNA-mRNA interaction profiles for elucidating microRNA function in leukemia”
 
within the research focus “Epigenetics and non-coding-RNA in cancer gene regulation” of the Düsseldorf School of Oncology. The Düsseldorf School of Oncology (DSO) invites applications for PhD scholarships within the Graduate Training Program in Oncology at the University Cancer Center of the University Hospital Düsseldorf. The project will be coordinated by the Mathematical institute (Prof. Holger Schwender) and the Clinic for pediatric oncology, hematology (Dr. Pablo Landgraf) at the Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf. The project aims to develop algorithms to identify microRNA target determinants in high-resolution microRNA target mapping data obtained by next-generation sequencing.

The DSO (http://www.hhu.de/dso/) is a research training program in which basic and clinical scientists from Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf and University Cancer Center work together in multidisciplinary oncological research projects. The primary research goals of the DSO groups are to unravel important pathomechanisms involved in major cancer diseases and to translate these findings into better diagnostic tools and more effective therapies. The present call specifically invites applications for the University Cancer Center’s research focus on `Epigenetics and non-coding-RNA in cancer gene regulation´. The DSO interdisciplinary graduate training program in cancer research offers next to an outstanding collaborative research environment an excellent qualification program with practical training and transferable skills courses. In addition, individual mentoring and career development possibilities are offered.

We invite applications from a dedicated PhD researcher with an excellent master or diploma degree in statistics or bioinformatics or a life scientist with profound bioinformatic/statistical knowledge. Aside from a strong background in a quantitative field, skills in scripting computer languages and basic statistical programming in R language are required. Furthermore, the applicant has to have a profound interest in translational medical research and in biological implication of research as well as strong written and oral communication skills.

Scholarships are provided according to the standards of the DFG (German Research Foundation) and are available for up to three years. Funding will start at the beginning of 2015.
