starting date 01.10.2015, fixed-term until 31.10.2017. Subject to the continued third-party funding of the cluster after 2017, the extension of the contract may be possible.
The period of employment is governed by § 2 Fixed Term Research Contracts Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz – WissZeitVG). The position offers the chance to obtain further academic qualification (e.g. PhD). Balancing family and career is an important issue. Position and Requirements
We are in the process of starting a new Chair of Processor Design with the long-term vision of shaping the way future electronic systems are to be designed and programmed. Reliability of systems has been decreasing with shrinking transistor geometries and aggressive voltage scaling. This reduced reliability often causes the computed results to be inaccurate. As a result, many attempts are being made to perform reliable computations on such unreliable hardware. In this project we will develop system architectures that are able to reduce the energy consumption by a few orders of magnitude, albeit with slight loss in accuracy.
The successful candidate will: develop novel techniques for designing approximate components; identify mechanisms for reconfiguring the approximate components; prototype these components on FPGA; demonstrate the use of these components in a multimedia application.
We aim at attracting the best talent in the respective research fields and expect the following: an outstanding university degree (master or equivalent) in computer science, electrical engineering or a related field; previous experience in the field of multiprocessor embedded systems; good programming skills (especially on scripting, assembly-level and C languages) as well as good hardware-design skills (especially using VHDL/Verilog and component-based design) are important; experience in using FPGAs for design will provide an added advantage; very good interpersonal and communication skills; in particular, the ability to effectively work in collaborative research efforts; an independent, target- and solution-driven work attitude; inter- and multidisciplinary thinking; strong motivation and interest to join one of the most ambitious interdisciplinary research clusters; fluency in English - written and oral.
