The project
Noldus Information Technology collaborates with the University of Tübingen (Germany) in a Marie Curie European Industrial Doctorate research and training program. The Marie Curie EID PhenoRat project aims at the generation, characterization and validation of transgenic animal models of neurodegenerative
diseases (Huntington Disease and SpinoCerebellar Ataxia type 17). This requires the development of novel methods and techniques for the tracking and analysis of animal behavior. Within the project there will be intensive collaboration between computer scientists, behavioral biologists and neuroscientists from industry and academia, resulting in a research program with doctoral education and stimulation of entrepreneurship.

The position
This specific research position concerns the automated tracking and identification of multiple socially housed rodents from 3D sensors such as Kinect. The outcome will be used to recognize and phenotype the social behavior of the HD and SCA17 rats. The research fellow will work on algorithms and software based on an already available and annotated dataset.
The project started in October 2012 and will end on 31 October 2016. During the past period research an inventory was made of state-of-the-art techniques in this field and a large 3D dataset has been recorded and annotated. You will be employed at Noldus Information Technology bv in Wageningen, The Netherlands until 31 October 2016, the end date of the project funding. You will work within the Research & Development department. Scientific supervision of the project will be provided by Prof. dr. Remco
Veltkamp (Department of Computer Science) of Utrecht University, where the research fellow might be enrolled as a Ph.D. student. Daily supervision will be done by senior Computer Vision Researchers from Noldus.
Your profile
- University degree (M.Sc. level) in computer science, biomedical engineering or electronic engineering.
- Substantial knowledge of mathematics, statistics and informatics, as well as computer programming (e.g. Matlab, C++, C#, Java). We will provide additional training in software engineering and application development.
- Knowledge/experience with computer vision and depth sensors is an advantage.
- You are willing to move to The Netherlands.
- You are a creative and pro-active person who likes to work independently, with a strong drive and perseverance to accomplish a challenging mission.
Marie Curie EID regulations
- You have not yet been awarded the doctorate degree and are still within the first 4 years (fulltime equivalent) of your career in research (i.e. after completion of university education), at the time of appointment.
- You must not have resided or carried out your main activity (work, studies, etc.) in The
Netherlands for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to recruitment.
Unfortunately it is not possible for our company to arrange working permits for non EU
- You will be employed as an Early Stage Researcher according to Marie Curie EID regulations, which offer excellent employment conditions including a high base salary (approx. € 38.000 per year) and many additional benefits such as allowances for travel, mobility and education.
The duration of employment will be until 31 October 2016.
