The research focus will be on
Development and Experimental Validation of Control Algorithms for Wind Turbines with Smart Blades
 
To improve the economic viability of very large wind turbines in the future, a technological change is required by introducing new concepts and control strategies of the overall system. Novel so-called smart blades with distributed passive or active control surfaces aim at decreasing the loads due to local gusts as well as boosting the energy production. Since additional sensors and spread actuators make such concepts inherently more complex, a thorough analysis is needed to determine their impact on reliability, loads and energy production. To this aim, wind tunnel experiments capable of reproducing varying turbulent inflow conditions in a controlled manner can be used to complement numerical simulations and eventually full scale field tests.
Job DescriptionThe main goal of the PhD project is to develop a setup for hardware in the loop simulations of a wind turbine with smart blades, and use it for thorough analysis of control algorithms for smart blades. To this aim, a non-rotating blade segment with a controllable trailing edge flap will be developed and used in a wind tunnel. An appropriate generation of various dynamic inflow conditions together with wind turbine numerical simulations will enable simulation of wind turbine's behaviour when subjected to various wind conditions. Experiments in the developed hardware in the loop setup will be used extensively to support development and validation of wind turbine control algorithms.
Among others, the job will comprise:
  • Definition of the blade segment and relevant test cases
  • Experimental identification of the blade segment system
  • Preparation of wind tunnel experiments with various inflow conditions
  • Coupling of numerical simulations and experimental setup
  • Control development for a wind turbine with smart blades
  • Implementation and experimental validation of control algorithms
  • Comparison of numerical and experimental results
 
The research will be conducted in close cooperation with the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Fraunhofer IWES and ForWind – University of Hannover within the BMWi project SmartBlades2.0.
Furthermore, the candidate will be given opportunities to actively improve personal, scientific and teaching skills.
Candidate ProfilePrerequisite is a qualifying university degree (diploma or master) in engineering, physics or an equivalent course of studies with extensive knowledge in control engineering. Basic expertise in wind turbine dynamics, fluid and structural dynamics, is desired. Experience with experimental techniques, Matlab/Simulink and LabVIEW programming tools, real-time control systems, and standard laboratory tools is considered a plus. Further requirements are the aptitude and willingness for pursuing a PhD with emphasis on experimental research, as well as fluently spoken and written English. Good German language skills are desired as well.
The employment is limited until the end of project on 30th November 2019.
