Aims of the project
Honeybees are very important pollinators of both wild and crop plants. The main threat to honeybee colony survival is the Varroa mite. In addition, colony losses in honeybees are assumed to be associated with reduced genetic variability in selected populations. This project, financed by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, aims to:
 
-  Develop a new high density SNP chip
-  Estimate SNP marker effects for important breeding traits, especially disease resistance
-  Establish a unified approach which combines full pedigree and genomic information from 
   both genotyped and ungenotyped individuals
-  Provide insight into the genetic diversity of the German honeybee population using WGS and SNP
   data.

Requirements
 
  • An excellent degree in bioinformatics/statistics/mathematics/quantitative genetics (or equivalent).
  • A solid understanding of statistical genetic methods and experience with application of these to real data like large NGS- and SNP-datasets.
  • An interest in quantitative genetic models of complex (maternally influenced) traits
  • Preferable experience in scripting and/or programming.
  • Knowledge of animal breeding concepts, especially genomic selection, is an advantage.
  • Excellent communication skills in English (spoken and written).
  • Cooperation with the molecular biologist involved in the project, other groups of the house and cooperation partners.
  • A proactive, highly-motivated team player with good organisational skills.

Given the final approval of the project by the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, these positions will be available for 3 years beginning on January 1st, 2015.
