Reference: 149/2015
From 1st October 2015
at the Institute of Pharmacy
– Professorship for Phospholipids in Drug Development –
Faculty of Biology and Pharmacy
of the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena
Two PhD student positions are available in the newly established group of Prof. Paola Luciani at the Institute of Pharmacy of the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena, Laboratory of Phospholipids in Drug Development, starting from October 1st 2015.
The group’s research is characterized by a multidisciplinary approach aimed at developing lipid-based tools for diagnostic molecular imaging and for targeted therapy of fibrotic diseases (PhD candidate 1). Another research focus will be the understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the oral administration of lipid-based formulations and the effect of oxidative stress on phospholipids as nutraceuticals (PhD candidate 2).

During the project a special attention will be dedicated to the characterization of the phospholipid-based systems. The biophysical properties of the membranes upon interaction with drugs, or different phospholipids, or upon oxidative stress, or in the gastrointestinal milieu will be thoroughly investigated using established methods and/or developing new ones. Differential scanning calorimetry, fluorescence anisotropy, liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry are some of the techniques the PhD candidate will learn to master.
A correlation between the physico-chemical properties and the biological fate of the phospholipid-based systems will be established in order to understand the cellular mechanisms behind the phenomena. Flow cytometric analysis will be a key technique to achieve this goal, together with imaging techniques (fluorescence and confocal microscopy).

The successful candidates must be highly motivated and proactive, have the desire to learn new methods and concepts, and have a strong interest in drug formulation and delivery, specifically in biophysical characterization techniques, in analytical biosciences, and in cell culture models. The candidates are expected to supervise undergraduate students in the Pharmacy practical courses, therefore a degree in Pharmacy is required, as well as a fluent command of German.
Ability to work in a team and good communication skills (working language is English) are also an important requirement.
The position is a part-time work (50%), remunerated under state salary scheme TV-L E13 and limited to a term of three years. In addition to the project-related work there is the possibility for scientific qualification (obtaining a PhD).
Severely disabled applicants with equal qualification and aptitude are given preferential consideration.
Applications should be sent by e-mail to Prof. Paola Luciani (, and should include a letter describing the research interests and motivation for PhD studies, a CV, an authorized copy of the Pharmacy degree, the names and contact information (address, email address, and phone number) of at least two reference persons, relevant publications (including final thesis).
Deadline for applications is Monday, 07.09.2015.
