PhD on Growth and Characterisation of Dilute Nitride Ga(NAsP)/Si and (GaIn)(NAs)/GaAs for information and communication technology
 
Photonics, nanotechnology, advanced materials and advanced manufacturing techniques have been identified as key enabling technologies for a diverse range of application areas and today the photonics global market alone is around € 300 billion. PROMIS ( www.physics.lancs.ac.uk/promis  Postgraduate Research on on Dilute Metamorphic Nanostructures and Metamaterials in Semiconductor Photonics) is an Initial Training Network funded by the EU Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions. The PROMIS network brings together a well-balanced consortium of 10 academic institutions and 8 industry partners from across Europe having worldwide reputations as leaders in their respective fields.

The network will train a cohort of 15 early stage researchers in the full range of skills required for a career in photonics, including materials growth, device fabrication, characterisation, design, theory, and commercialisation. These skills will be applied in developing advanced photonic materials and devices for four application areas: Information and Communications, Security, Energy and Environment. Each researcher will experience both academic and commercial environments thanks to the strong industrial involvement, resulting in multi-skilled, industry-focused graduates.

Description
Philipps-Universität Marburg, Faculty of Physics and Materials Science Center, has a vacancy (starting from June 2015) for an Early Stage Researcher (ESR) to pursue a PhD degree, funded for a period of 36 months. The salary will be in accordance with Marie-Curie ITN standards.The ESR will be registered as a PhD student at Philipps-Universität Marburg ( www.uni-marburg.de ), faculty of physics, and will carry out the majority of his/her research in the Materials Science Center, Structure and Technology Laboratory (www.uni-marburg.de/wzmw/strl), working on the epitaxial growth and characterization of dilute nitride alloys for the development of using metal organic vapour phase epitaxy (MOVPE). The research will involve systematic MOVPE growth studies of various dilute nitride alloys, characterisation of the resulting materials using high-resolution X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence spectroscopy as well as atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Devices will also be fabricated and extensively tested in collaboration with other PROMIS partners.

The ESR will join the Structure and Technology Laboratory ( www.uni-marburg.de/wzmw/strl ) and will be supervised by Prof. Kerstin Volz. He/she will work closely with other PROMIS researchers at Tyndall Tyndall-UCC, in ROME, at UCA as well as in SGENIA with a number of secondment visits to these partners.

Requirements
The successful applicant will be required to satisfy the eligibility criteria for Marie Curie Early Stage Researchers, i. e:
 
  • Must be within the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research career
  • Must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) within Germany for more than 12 months in the three years immediately prior to their recruitment
The applicant will also be expected to have a first or upper second class honours (or equivalent) undergraduate degree in physics or a related discipline.
