INM is focused on the research and development of materials. Chemists, physicists, biologists, materials and engineering scientists shape the work at INM. From molecule to pilot production, they follow the recurring questions: Which material properties are new, how can they be investigated and how can they be used in the future?
The nanotribology group at the INM – Leibniz-Institute for New Materials, led by Prof. Dr. Roland Bennewitz, is looking for

2 PhD students

starting in fall 2015. The nanotribology group investigates the physical mechanisms underlying friction and adhesion at the nanometer scale, in close collaboration with chemists and material scientists. We are one of the leading groups in friction force microscopy and strive to contribute to the advancement of science through cutting-edge experiments.
One project will address the cooperative role of multiple chemical bonds in friction and adhesion. Force measurements with high time resolution on chemical bonds with designated kinetics will lead to a deeper understanding of multivalency effects in extended contacts.
In the second project we will investigate the role of molecular layering in lubrication. Liquid hydrocarbons show a substantial ordering when confined in nanometer-scale contacts. It is the goal of this project to relate the molecular ordering to mechanisms of lubrication.
Candidates should have a M.Sc. in physics, physical chemistry, or materials science and be ambitious to obtain outstanding results though to carefully designed experiments. Experiences with scanning probe microscopy or the topics described above are welcome but not prerequisite.
