The University of Luxembourg has the following vacancy in the Physics and Materials Research Unit of its Faculty of Sciences, Technology and Communication.

Doctoral Candidate (PhD student) in Physics (M/F)
  • 3-year employment,40 hours/week
  • F1-120007
  • Student status

    Area: Liquid crystal nanocomposites

The Physics and Materials Research Unit of the University of Luxembourg concentrates on the physics of condensed matter. The group of Dr. Giusy Scalia works on liquid crystals and nanoparticles, in particular carbon-based particles such as carbon nanotubes and graphene flakes. The PhD topic is located in the intersection of these materials classes, dealing with composites of nanoparticles in liquid crystals. The challenges and tasks range from the stable integration of nanoparticles in the liquid crystal host to the characterization and analysis of the physical properties of the macroscopic phase, and the establishment of physical models for explaining the observed behavior.

    Tasks

  • Prepare a doctoral thesis in Physics
  • Assist in teaching activities, one to three hours per week.
  • Produce composites of nanoparticles in liquid crystal phases by means of ultrasound dispersion or other methods, characterize them with nano- microscale resolution using e.g. optical and electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, scattering and spectroscopic techniques. Investigate the macroscopic physical properties and develop theoretically founded models that reproduce the behavior.

Profile:
  • M. Sc. in Physics, Chemistry or Materials Science
  • Excellent knowledge of English is required, knowledge in French and/or German useful
  • Experience in liquid crystal and/or nanoparticle research is highly desirable

Offer:
  • An exciting multi-disciplinary international environment
