PhD: Evolution and predictability of storm structure during extratropical transition of tropical cyclones

Our ability to predict the weather up to a week or more ahead saves our societies billions of Euros annually and protects human life and property. The great challenge today is to identify the limits of weather predictability in different situations and produce the best forecasts that are physically
possible.

On July 1st 2015, the Transregional Collaborative Research Center “Waves to Weather” (W2W; SFB/TRR165; http://w2w.meteo.physik.uni-muenchen.de/) was established to address these issues and to deliver the underpinning science urgently needed to pave the way towards a new generation of weather forecasting systems.
The W2W consortium consists of:
- the Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU, Munich)
- the Johannes Gutenberg-University (JGU, Mainz)
- the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), together with
- the Technische Universität München (TUM)
- the Heidelberg University, and
- the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR, Munich).

The following PhD-position is available within the W2W consortium:

Location: Johannes Gutenberg-University, Mainz

Advisors: Prof. Dr. Elmar Schömer and Dr. Michael Riemer

This PhD position will contribute to project A4 “Evolution and predictability of storm structure during extratropical transition of tropical cyclones” of the W2W consortium.

Outline: Tropical cyclones are among the most treacherous weather systems. When they move into the midlatitudes they undergo complex structural changes that determine the distribution of hazardous weather. These changes in storm structure are not yet understood well and accurate forecasts to produce timely warnings for affected areas pose a real challenge.
The successful candidate will have the exciting opportunity in this project to contribute to a multi-disciplinary approach to better understand these fascinating storm systems. The interaction of distinct air masses is arguably key to the evolution. She/ He will thus investigate the transport of air masses in the storms’ vicinity by developing clustering strategies for air parcel trajectories and implementing efficient algorithms for the identification of transport barriers.

Requirements: A strong background in computational science, very good programming skills (including Python), and a degree in computational science, physics, or a related field are required. The ideal candidate will further have a basic physics background and a keen interest in fluid dynamical problems.

The position is funded until June 2019. The successful PhD candidate will be remunerated according to TV-L 13 (75%) and should start as soon as possible.

Responsibilities and requirements are outlined on the website http://w2w.meteo.physik.uni-muenchen.de. The position is a fixed-term employment contract until June 2019. The contract is time-limited according to the Academic Fixed-Term Contract Law (WissZeitVG). The salary
scale is TV-L E13. Employment shall begin as soon as possible.
