PhD position in theoretical physics with applications to biology and electrical engineering

In the context of the excellence cluster Center for Advancing Electronics Dresden, we investigate the possibility of self-organized synchronization in networks of electronic oscillators as a means to coordinate electronic communication systems. During the first stage of this project it has been shown using biology as an inspiration that networks of phase-locked loops (PLLs) are able to synchronize in a self-organized way in the presence of  signal transmission delays. Such delays are caused by the spatial distribution of these electronic clocks.
 
The new PhD student will study the robustness of such mutually coupled networks against perturbations, such as parameter variations, and fluctuations caused by internal and external noise sources. This includes for example to study nonlinear stochastic dynamical systems. Furthermore, it has to be investigated how such networks have to be initialized in order to efficiently boot into a specific synchronized state. In addition, experiments to compare and validate the theoretical result in experimental prototype networks are planned.
 
We are looking for outstanding physicists interested in theoretical physics and its applications to electrical engineering, to work and learn in an interdisciplinary environment with collaborative research groups. The candidate should be fluent in English, written and oral. The Max Planck Institute aims to increase the number of women in scientific positions.
