The newly established Theoretical Astrophysics group at University of Cologne invites applications for a

PhD position (m/f) in computational astrophysics

The position is funded by the European Research Council and the initial salary is based on the German E13 TV-L scale (19.92 hours/week) if terms and conditions under collective bargaining law are fulfilled. which accounts for experience and qualification. Possible starting date for the position is April 2016. The contract is limited for three years.

The group aims at bridging the gap between local studies of star formation and feedback and the galaxy-scale evolution of the interstellar medium (ISM). In particular, we focus on the theoretical understanding of the physics of the ISM in disk galaxies, covering the area of star formation and stellar feedback to the driving of galactic fountains and outflows. This is done utilizing three-dimensional, high-resolution simulations, which require highperformance computing. We use both grid-based and SPH schemes, but the main focus for the offered positions is on grid-based codes (FLASH).

Candidates should hold a university diploma in physics, astronomy or a related field. Furthermore, the successful applicant should have a background in astrophysics and, most importantly, programming experience (with C/C++/or Fortran) and a strong interest in scientific computing. He/she will work on the impact of radiative feedback from massive stars. This task involves both, the development and improvement of simulation techniques, as well as to carry out and analyze the high-resolution, 3D simulations and compare them with recent observations.

The University of Cologne is an equal opportunities employer. Applications of women are thus especially encouraged; applications of disabled persons will be given preferential treatment to those of other candidates with equal qualifications.

Closing date for application is January 31, 2016, but search will continue until the position is filled. Applicants should send a single PDF file containing a CV, educational record, and a short statement of research interests. Please indicate your possible starting date and arrange for two letters of recommendation to be sent directly to Stefanie Walch by the deadline. Electronic applications are encouraged.
