The group of Prof. Dr. Dieter Neher at the University of Potsdam, Germany, invites applications for a PhD position in the area of Hybrid Photovoltaics

Given the complementary properties of inorganic and organic semiconductors, hybrid devices give promise for novel photovoltaic systems with tailored properties. Recent work by the Neher group and others revealed the existence of hybrid charge transfer states (HCTS) at the interface between ZnO and organic semiconductors. This project aims at resolving the ongoing controversial discussion on the nature of such hybrid excitations and their involvement in free charge generation in hybrid solar cells. Hybrid systems comprising different metal oxides and suitable electron-donating organic molecules will be employed as testbeds for detailed measurements of the steady state and transient HCTS properties, using state-of-the-art electro­lumi­nescence, photoluminescence and pump-probe techniques. These experimental studies will be accompanied by extensive simulation work, to be performed in close collaboration with partners of the research consortium.

The position will be funded by the Collaborative Research Center Hybrid Inorganic/Organic Systems for Opto-Electronics (HIOS). This center comprises more than twenty groups at four universities and several extramural institutions in the Potsdam-Berlin area, renowned for their outstanding work on the design, realization, and understanding of hybrid optoelectronic systems.

The successful candidates are motivated and skilled researchers with a Master degree or Diploma in Physics or Chemical Physics. In particular, we are looking for individuals with a strong background in organic semiconductors physics, and with experience in the fabrication and characterization of organic or hybrid devices. As the work will also comprise numerical modeling, programming skills are highly appreciated.
