Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f) in computational astrophysics

The positions are funded by the European Research Council and the salary is based on the German E13 TV-L scale (39.83 hours/week) if terms and conditions under collective bargaining law are fulfilled. Possible starting date for both positions is April 2016. The initial contracts are limited for two years with a possible extension of additional 3 years.

The group aims at bridging the gap between local studies of star formation and feedback and the galaxy-scale evolution of the interstellar medium (ISM). In particular, we focus on the theoretical understanding of the physics of the ISM in disk galaxies, covering the area of star formation and stellar feedback to the driving of galactic fountains and outflows. This is done utilizing three-dimensional, high-resolution simulations, which require high-performance computing. We use both grid-based and SPH schemes, but the main focus for the offered positions is on grid-based codes (FLASH).

(1) The successful applicant for position 1 will analyze simulations of the ISM in disk galaxies. He or she should be experienced with code development, post-processing simulation data, and working on comparing simulations and observations. The aim is to constrain observables and to cross-correlate simulations and observations at multiple wavelengths from the infrared to the X-ray and Cosmic Ray regime. This should ultimately provide an "observational toolbox" with which simulation data can be post-processed and compared to observations.

(2) The successful applicant for position 2 will develop new numerical techniques and improve existing ones. Ideally, he or she will have in-depth experience in highperformance computing and computational astrophysical fluid dynamics, preferably including MHD and radiative transfer. The aim of the project is the simulation of the impact of UV and X-ray emission from shocks and stellar sources on gas dynamics and chemistry in 3D MHD simulations.

Candidates should hold a university diploma and a PhD in physics, astrophysics, or a related field and a strong background in scientific computing.
