Microfluidic methods for cryo-microscopy

The Max Planck Research Group “Biological Micro- and Nanotechnology” (Dr. Thomas Burg) at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry is looking for a postdoctoral scientist with a strong background in applied physics, mechanical or optical engineering, or a related field to join our team on an exciting project combining microfluidics with light and electron cryo-microscopy.
 
The aim of the project is to advance a unique method recently invented by our laboratory for preserving dynamic cell structures at the nanometer scale with millisecond time resolution by rapid freezing during continuous live-cell imaging. The project exploits the small size, high heat conductivity and precise geometry of silicon, glass, and polymer microdevices to achieve extremely high cooling rates (104 – 105 °C/s), which can be electronically controlled. These high rates help to avoid ice crystal damage, while the design of the system enables continuous observation and stimulation up to and including the time of freezing. This postdoc position focuses on the instrumentation development for a complete correlative workflow from live imaging and stimulation to cryo-fluorescence and ultimately electron cryo-microscopy.

We are looking for
  • Candidates with a recent PhD in applied/experimental physics, optical or mechanical engineering, or a related discipline
  • Skill and enthusiasm for designing and building physical instrumentation (optics, mechanics, software, and electronics) to solve unconventional problems
  • Understanding of heat and mass transport in microfluidic systems
  • An interest in the biological applications of the new method
