Within the project consortium "Lossless Photon management – Optical design for manufacture at different length scales" (NOLOSS) within the EU MARIE SKŁODOWSKA-CURIE ACTIONS, the consortium partners TNO, Delft, The Netherlands, and Abbe Center of Photonics, Jena, Germany  offer a PhD position on “Optical systems based on metasurface elements”. 
 
Metasurfaces are one of the main fields of current photonics research. Based on layers of resonant nanostructures, they in principle allow for the implementation of sophisticated functionalities in ultra-thin optical elements. After first proposals of a metasurface-based lens capable of resolving sub-diffraction limited features by Pendry et al. in the year 2000, many other researchers followed with different concepts. Among the experimentally demonstrated optical elements are holograms, diffractive optical elements, and phase retarders. One of the fundamentally new features of metasurface-based optical elements is their strong resonant dispersion, which enables to simultaneously implement different functionalities for different exciting wavelengths.
After a lot of fundamental scientific work was devoted to metasurfaces built from metallic nanostructures, which suffer from strong optical losses, recently lossless metasurfaces based on all-dielectic nanostructures have been introduced. This development now paves the way for using the potential of metasurfaces to realize real-world applications.
The offered PhD position will be focused on realizing the transition of metasurfaces from being a promising scientific idea to becoming an applicable optical device. To this end, the PhD candidate will design metasurfaces and complete optical devices based on these structures for several example applications. Special attention will be paid to the constraints introduced by the need to integrate metasurfaces into larger optical instruments. She/he will furthermore characterize the performance of manufactured samples as well as the complete devices.
To be able to successfully complete this PhD project, the PhD candidate should have an outstanding academic record as well as the constant desire to learn and improve, enabling her/him to master the numerous different theoretical and experimental methods necessary to understand, design, and characterize the performance of metasurface-based optical elements.
 
TNO, The Netherland's Organization of Applied Scientific Research, is the largest research institute in The Netherlands. Its Delft branch focuses on applying modern optics to developing equipment for the semiconductor industry and bio-scientific applications.
 
The Abbe Center of Photonics is a large interfaculty institution of the Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena, Germany, devoted to research and education in all branches of modern photonics. The PhD candidate will be part of the Nano-optics group, which is aiming to use nanostructures to control all aspects of light propagation.

The PhD project will be carried out between both partners and is funded for a duration of three years. According to the rules of the MARIE SKŁODOWSKA-CURIE ACTIONS the PhD candidate will spend at least half his / her time at TNO in Delft and the other part of the PhD project in Jena. The position is a full-time position with a salary according to the MARIE SKŁODOWSKA-CURIE ACTIONS rules and adapted to local regulations. To be eligible, any candidate must be an Early Stage Researcher. He must not have a PhD and must have fewer than four years of research experience. These eligibility requirements for MARIE SKŁODOWSKA-CURIE ACTIONS are non-negotiable and ineligible candidates will not be considered.
