The Fraunhofer IOF conducts application-oriented research in the field of optical systems engineering on behalf of its clients in industry and within publicly-funded collaborative projects. The Fraunhofer IOF provides the entire process chain, starting from system design to manufacture of prototype optical, opto-mechanical and opto-electronic systems.

What we expect from you
  • Master's degree in photonics, physics, electrical engineering or a closely related discipline
  • Knowledge in fiber handling, processing and applications
  • Usage and optimization of laser and LED light sources as well as fast photodiode detectors would be a plus
The working language is English. Knowledge of the German language is a plus.

What you can expect from us

Fraunhofer IOF together with Friedrich-Schiller-University (FSU) Jena and the Hans-Knöll-Institut (HKI) are collaborating within the science campus “Infectooptics” framework. There, the joint collaboration project “FastDrop” aims for the ultrafast analysis of microorganisms that are cultivated in microfluidic droplets. The analysis needs to be fast due to the kHz-range of droplet creation and manipulation and shall be based on optical fiber excitation and detection. The aim is to design, develop and evaluate a fiber-bundle-based optical sensor for signature detection of microorganisms by means of optical phenomena such as absorption, fluorescence, stray light, and Raman. Focus is on the development and manufacturing of a new type of fiber bundle sensor as well as its adaption to fast light based excitation and optical readout. The work would be carried out in a multi-disciplinary team of engineers, physicists and biologists. Aiming for a promotion within the project is strongly recommended.

Appointment, remuneration and social security benefits based on the public-sector collective wage agreement (TVöD).
The working time consists of 30 hours per week. The position is inititally for 3 years.
In case of identical qualifications, preference will be given to severely disabled candidates.
The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is committed to providing equal career opportunities for men and women.
