The University of Luxembourg invites applications for the following vacancy in its Faculty of Science, Technology and Communication
Doctoral candidate (PhD student) in the field of: Computational Bio/Nano Physics  (m/f)
  • Ref: F1R-PHY-PUL-14IQIN
  • Fixed-term contract 3 years, full-time  (40 hrs/week)
  • Student status
The PhD student will be a member of the Physics and Materials research unit (Theory of Soft Matter) within the Faculty of Science, Technology and Communication at the University of Luxembourg.  He/she will work under supervision of Dr. Joshua T. Berryman with additional mentoring by Prof Raffaele Mezzenga (ETH Zurich) and Prof Tanja Schilling (University of Luxembourg).
Activities
  • The candidate will use recently-developed computer simulation methods to study the aggregation properties of certain protein fragments (peptides).  These properties are of interest both for the design of biologically derived or inspired materials and for the control of peptide aggregation in-vivo.  Details of related previous work can be found at www.berrymanscience.com/citations.html
  • Write a thesis in the domain of Physics
Profile
  • MSc, diploma or 1st class BSc in Physics, Chemistry, or other demanding science degree with mathematical content.
  • Proven programming experience in C or fortran (shown by transcripts or online project work).
  • Advanced computing and mathematical skills (shown by transcripts or online project work).
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Able to take responsibility for problem-solving.
  • Preferably should have some knowledge of protein biochemistry.
