PhD Position in Relativistic Heavy Ion Physics: The CBM Experiment

The Physics Department at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal (Germany) invites applications for a Research Associate (PhD student) to work on the CBM experiment at the future FAIR facility in Darmstadt. The position commences at the earliest possible date.
It is remunerated at the salary level E13 TV-L and calls for 50 percent of the regular weekly work hours (which currently is 39 hours) of work per week.  Alternatively, we offer a tax free stipend of 18,000 Euro per annum. Health insurance is to be covered by the stipend holder.
The CBM experiment will explore the QCD phase diagram of baryonic matter in the region of high net-baryon density and moderate temperature by means of heavy ion collisions between 4 and 15 AGeV. Dilepton decays of vector mesons, like the Rho, allow direct access to the early, high-density phase of the fireball evolution. For this purpose, a Ring-Imaging Cherenkov detector (RICH), optimized for good electron identification and pion suppression, is being constructed. High-energy photons may be detected by conversion into electron-pairs. This process will be of particular interest for measuring the background of lepton-pairs arising from hadronic decays.
The group at Wuppertal took over particular responsibility for the design and construction of the RICH photon detector, consisting of about 1000 Multianode Photomultiplier tubes (MAPMT). Coordinating the acceptance tests of these PMTs will be part of the project. Alternatively, and in case of qualification, participation in the development of the fast readout electronics conducted jointly with the GSI Helmholtz Centre in Darmstadt is possible.
The group provides excellent laboratory infrastructure and computing facilities. Further information on our work group and the fields of activity we are involved in can be found at: http://astro.uni-wuppertal.de
Applicants must hold a qualifying degree in physics at the time of recruitment. The successful candidate should have experience in either experimental heavy-ion, nuclear, or (astro)particle physics.
The initial appointment will be for 1 year to be renewed up to 3 years.
Applicants should send their documents (CV, applicable certificates, list of publication/presentations, and the names and addresses of two referees) before June 6, 2015 in electronic or paper form to the address given below.
