PhD Position in Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray Physics: The Auger Observatory
The Physics Department at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal (Germany) invites applications for a Research Associate (PhD student) to work on the Pierre Auger Observatory.
The Department is involved in forefront research in the areas of ultra-high energy cosmic ray physics, neutrino-astronomy, and hot and dense nuclear matter. The successful candidate will join a team of more than 15 people working on the world’s largest cosmic ray observatory. The Pierre Auger Observatory is located in West-Argentina and covers an area of 3000 km2. It comprises 1660 water-Cherenkov stations, 27 air fluorescence telescopes, and several enhancements, including a radio antenna field and is designed to solve the long-standing puzzle about the origin of ultra-high energy cosmic rays. A multitude of spectacular results were already published and with the upgrade AugerPrime new questions will be addressed. The research group at Wuppertal is involved in various aspects of the data analysis and interpretation and has hardware and maintenance responsibilities. Moreover, it will contribute to AugerPrime, which foresees to complement each water-Cherenkov Station with a scintillation detector and new electronics.
The group provides excellent laboratory infrastructure and computing facilities. Further information on our work group and the fields of activity we are involved in can be found at: http://astro.uni-wuppertal.de
The position commences at the earliest possible date and is remunerated at the salary level E13 TV-L. It calls for 50 percent of the regular weekly work hours (which currently is 39 hours) of work per week.
Applicants must hold a qualifying degree in physics at the time of recruitment. The successful candidate should have experience in experimental astroparticle physics or neighboring fields, such as nuclear or particle physics.
The initial appointment will be for 1 year to be renewed up to 3 years.
Applicants should send their documents (CV, applicable certificates, list of publication/presentations, and the names and addresses of two referees) before August 6, 2015 in electronic or paper form to the address given below.
