The Institute of Radiation Physics invites applications for a position as

PhD student (m/f) in the field of modeling of patient irradiation with purpose on dose assessment

becoming available with immediate effect for a period of three years. The salary is according to German Public Service classification (TVöD-B).

The HZDR has an internationally accepted track record in developing non invasive methods for assessing the range of beams in vivo during cancer radiation therapy with protons and light ions. Within this context the HZDR pioneered the clinical application of particle therapy positron emission tomography. ln close cooperation with the National Center for Radiation Research in Oncology-OncoRay - the HZDR is exploring novel approaches to range assessment and in-vivo dosimetry for verifying therapeutic irradiations of cancer patients with proton beams. ln this context, secondary radiation signatures produced by proton beams in tissue, in particular prompt gamma rays and neutrons, have to be quantified and understood.

Requirements:
  • Master or Diploma degree in physics with excellent credentials
  • consolidated knowledge of basic processes and effects concerning the generation and transportation of nuclear radiation in matter
  • experience in programming, preferably with C++ and/or Python
  • capability and willingness to familiarize with established simulation codes
  • ability to work in close collaboration and interaction with experimental groups
Tasks:
  • modeling of secondary radiation fields, in particular of gamma rays and neutrons, generated in proton irradiation of patients or other targets
  • modeling of detector responses for different types of neutron- and gamma detectors
  • exploration of correlations in time and space between the initial beam and target parameters and the secondary radiation signatures, as generated and as seen by the detectors
  • publication of results in scientific papers and conference contributions, translation in patent applications where appropriate
